Make: Online covers one of my tutorials.

July 23rd, 2010

It’s random but mildly exciting for me.  The website Make: Online has added a page to their site that links to the orb tool tutorial I posted back in April on Flickr.

I’ve never visited the site before, but they have some cool stuff and quite a few links to other light painting tool creation tutorials.  The cold cathode guide by Flickr mate { tcb } is particularily good.

London Comicon

July 17th, 2010

With our nerd badges affixed firmly to our lapels, Robert and I were off to this years Film and Comic Con for a day of childlike indulgance and perhaps a brush with fame or two.

These are mostly just snaps as I was far to excited about all of the toys on offer and costumes on display to worry too much about shooting.  (this should be read as an excuse for the poor quality of the shots)

We circled the showroom floor more than a dozen times as there was always some new gadget out that we had to have or some new cosplayer on display that we had to see.  Also, we spent a fair bit of time just waiting around for our photo op with Captain Kirk.

All in all, a great day out and definitely something we’ll do again!

Vader needed some battle station plans or something. I wasn't caving.

How awesome was this cylon costume! The sounds were even perfect.

Wouldn't be a comicon with out cute cosplay girls.

There are a few more shots from the day in the gallery.

Random Light Painting

July 10th, 2010

These are just a few quick shots from my last outing.  I wandered to the canals that run between my flat and the Thames hoping for a bit of darkness.  It’s so hard to find dark places in London, far to many lights!

It was also an excuse to try out the new light toy I built.  I like it, but it needs work.

Random orb near the canals.

Playing with the new tool some more. It hasn't worked out as well as I'd hoped.

An orb at the bottom of some steps.

Midnight Light Painting

June 21st, 2010

A few of the POTN crowd were out late on Saturday night in the More London area (City Hall and the immediate vicinity).  The plan was to stay up all night and get some eerie shots of an empty London when the sun started to rise at around 4am.  From a group of 6 of us, only one managed to stay up and get those sorts of shots.  I wasn’t that one.

Far too cold for this fair weather Canadian so I was back in my warm flat with a hot tea by 3am.  Respectable for an old man like myself, but not good enough to reach the initial goal.

I did however, manage to get in a bit of light painting before throwing in the towel.

Angelic Elephant

Beachball!

As always, there are more light painting and light orb photos in the gallery.

Wetlands Trust Macro Shoot

June 14th, 2010

I spent the day with Matt, Bonnie and Lord Crawley of Crawley roaming around London’s Wetland Trust shooting all things great and small.  Of particular interest in this meet were the small things.  Lee has managed to get a few people hooked on macro photography with his daily updates of creepy crawlies (no relation) he finds on his lunch break.

It’s been ages since I’d done anything fun with my macro lens and over a year since my last visit to the trust, so it seemed like a perfect way to spend a Sunday.

I’ll be perfectly honest…if it wasn’t for Lee spotting most of these interesting critters and pointing them out to me, this album would likely be full of dull close-ups of flowers.  As it is, there are only a few dull close-ups of flowers.

There are quite a few more in the gallery here.
